There are 388 Stolpersteine in Salzburg, Austria. Over the years, some have been damaged by wear and tear and winter weather. But now a 79-year-old Austrian, Gerhard Geier who is not Jewish, nor was his family affected by the Nazi war crimes, decided they needed to be maintained properly as a way of respect for each of the victims. So he created an important position for himself as the self designated custodian of each one of Salzburg’s 388 Stolpersteine.
